Velocity Rims

Buying Velocity Rims

velocity rimsVelocity is an Australian company making what are considered the best premium rims in the world.

Velocity rims generally have a well deserved reputation across the hobby and come out well in reviews.

The Velocity bike rims themselves are made from aircraft grade aluminum.

So what makes Velocity rims stand out and what is their range like?

The first thing you might notice about Velocity bicycle rims is the quality of the finish.  The sidewalls are machined to a smooth finish that is superior to a lot of their rivals.

So why is this so important?  Well the sidewall is the braking surface.

If it is not smooth or the rim width is not perfectly constant, you are going to have several problems.

First the braking will be jerky and unsafe.

Secondly if those sidewalls, especially on something like the Velocity Deep V aren’t smooth they will rip you pads apart in pretty quick order.

Finally as a combination of the two you will end up on your head or butt in a ditch or in front of a truck, neither of which is appealing.

The range of Velocity rims is extensive and covers various styles and situations:

Velocity Aerohead Rims

velocity rimsThe Aerohead is a great, solid all purpose rim.

It can be built into a very strong wheel and they do look great as well.

If your budget is at all limited they can be picked up for less than say a set of Mavic Open Pros.

It is a little heavier than some of the more expensive options, but unless you are a professional rider you won’t notice the difference much.

Velocity Fusion Rims

velocity rimsFusion rims are almost a half way house between the more traditional and shallow clincher style of the Aerohead and the modern Deep V style.

They are about the same width ways as both the other models, but deeper than the Aerohead.

They are a step up from the Aero as well, being lighter by about 35 grams and they ride very fast so are good for racing and track bikes.

Velocity Deep V Rims

velocity rimsThe Deep V rims come in several styles to suit different application.

Generally it is a very strong rim due to the V section and quite stiff.

Where it excels is in reducing the spoke count, depending on your weight. The Velocity rims Deep V section comes in about 30mm as compared to the 19mm on the Aerohead.

Capitalizing on its strength is the Deep V MTB rim, especially made for mountain bikes with a 26″ rim to increase that strength further.

Velocity Dyad Rims

velocity rimsThis is the real work horse of the Velocity rims range.

It is tough with no eyelets to shake free and can be used for a variety of uses from mountain bikes, around town and touring on fixed gear bikes.

They also work well with the 48 spoke available for tandems.

It is wider than the others at 24mm and deeper.  This increases the weight of these Velocity rims to 480 grams.

Of course there are many more Velocity rims than this but these are the mainstay rims to consider.
